Hey babe take walk the wild side (Oxford Street, Sydney)
For the people
watchers amongst you a walk down Oxford Street close to the
centre of Sydney might raise an eye brow - start from the
City end head for Taylor's Square - grab yourself a coffee
somewhere and watch the wild life sequined/leather/whatever
pass. For the more adventuress of you there's drag acts and
other forms of 'entertainment' to be found. Sydney's Gay and
Lesbian communities party during Mardi-Gras culminating in
the Mardi Gras parade - usually in March. For more information
visit the site below
For a more seedier
atmosphere there's Kings Cross and for more arty feel try
Newtown just outside
the city or visit Glebe. |

Madonna's Bra (ANZAC Bridge)
Air Zealand have
asked me to let you know that the ANZAC Bridge does NOT span
the Tasman to New Zealand. You'll just have to fly their I'm
afraid. Madonna's Bar is a nice looking bridge linking Sydney's
fringe suburbs to the city. Best seen from Blackwattle Bay
(Sydney Harbour Bridge in the background). The ANZAC Bridge
is the attraction rather than its surrounds so don’t
bother walking over it. Could use a larger stretch of water
to go under it...just my opinion.

Macquarie Street - New South Wales Parliament House
If you enjoyed
Hyde Park Barracks you might enjoy a walk up towards Sydney
Harbour along Macquarie Street. More 'old' buildings including
Sydney Hospital and New South Wales Parliament House (that's
State not Federal).
There's a coffee house in the hospital grounds not far from
the Domain. |

Fox Studios
Get yourself a
cold drink at the Fox and Lion near the Holdern Pavilion at
Fox Studios and try to work out just what is going on the
other side of the plaza. If you find out let me know. Fox
Studios is all fairly glitzy and superficial so the kids will
probably love it. One attraction that looks like fun is the
bungy trampoline. Appears to be aimed at kids but have a go
anyway. Fox Studios is close to the Sydney Football Stadium
and Sydney Cricket Ground. Click to get to the Fox Studios
Web site below and remember this is Fox, fair and impartial.

Cook and Phillip Park
Hidden beneath
Hyde Park southern section towards Oxford Street in Sydney’s
heartland lies an underworld as mysterious as pickled onions
or David Beckham. This is a modern and interesting (the art
work) swimming complex complete with fitness area. If you
are staying in the middle of town or work there this is an
excellent place to lose a few calories. If you prefer to exercise
outdoors you can always jog around Hyde Park. If you wish
to venture further the Domain lies ‘hidden’ to
the North East behind St
Mary’s Cathedral.

Balmain
Balmain is blessed
with a variety of pubs, cafes and narrow side streets with
some ‘water views’. Balmain is only a brief ferry
ride from Circular Quay and Darling Harbour. Get off at Darling
Street wharf and catch the bus or puff the ten minute walk
up the hill. Feels like a little England without the weather.
Grab a pint at the London Hotel (second pub up the hill, by
the roundabout) and ask somebody, preferable in a group, THE
best place for lunch – with any luck you’ll start
a debate.
Balmain also has
its own nightlife – the Unity Hall being the final late
haunt. |

Newtown
For an alternative
view of Sydney. It also has an endless supply of cafes and
restaurants and few interesting shops.
If there's a festival in Newtown it’s well worth the
visit.

Queen Victoria Building (QVB)
It is said that
the prices go up as you do. A well traveled pedestrian thoroughfare
from Town Hall Train Station to heart of Pitt Street. On your
way have a look at the clock on the top floor. The Statue
of Queen Victoria, at Town Hall Entrance, would not be out
of place in Trafalgar Square in London. |

Sydney Town Hall
Worth a quick look
if close by as much public money spent sprucing it up. To
quote their web site “One of the finest examples of
high Victorian architecture and decoration in Australia, it
features a magnificent wood-lined concert hall, a 8000 pipe
grand organ and exquisitely crafted stained glass windows”

Marble Bar
Attractive bar.
Bands play as well for an ‘older’ clientele. Nice
spot for a quiet drink before the place livens up.
Situated in the bowls of the Hilton Hotel in Pitt Street in
the city.

Commonwealth Bank – Martin Place
Corner of Castlereagh
Street and Martin Place. If you have to visit a bank why not
a marble one (now that’s where my fees go!) It’s
a lovely old building but its not suppose to be a tourist
attraction so please ask first if you want to take a photo |
