Mardi Gras in Sydney
What to do on Mardi Gras?
19th February until 7th March is Mardi Gras in Sydney.
The biggest parade and celebration of its kind in the world. But what
to do? How do you take part and get the most out of Mardi Gras.
Mardi Gras Things To Do For Gays
Happy Mardi Gras. For official information on events, parades and parties
best advice we can offer is head for the official website
Mardi Gras Things To Do For Visitors and Straights
If you have never seen it then the Mardi Gras Parade is a must. You don't
have to be gay to enjoy the humour, the irreverence, the music, costumes,
energy and fun the Parade generates. (Come on Fred, see the funny side).
So lets get things straight for things for a straight audience to watch
and take part in.
Mardi Gras Parade
On Mardi Gras night hundreds of thousands line Oxford Streets to watch
the colour, spectacle and outrageousness of the Parade. The Parade takes
place on 27th February 2010. It starts at approximately 7.45pm though
you are advised to get there much earlier. The Parade route begins at
Hyde Park and travels up Oxford St and unravels at Moore Park Road.
Mardi Gras Parade Carnival
The Parade may end but the celebrations don't. Head for the Show Ring,
Dome and Forum at the Entertainment Quarter, Moore Park where Parade Volunteers,
Parade Participants, NMG Members and their friends are invited to keep
on kicking on!
Fair Day
A showcase of entertainment on Fair Day includes performances from Mardi
Gras Festival highlights, international DJs and bands, and the return
of the AXN Search for a Cover Model competition on the ANZ Main Stage.
Performances include drag kings from A Night of Kings; part-parody, part-tribute
female trio the Margaritas as well as excerpts from many Festival shows
including Glace Chase’s Last Night’s Beauty, Dean Arcuri’s
To Sir With Glove, UK duo Frisky and Mannish, and Off-Broadway musical
Thrill Me, based on the chilling true story of the ‘perfect crime’
killers, Leopold and Loeb.
The Doggywood dog show is a the canine competition – including fantastic
games like the obstacle course and owner-mutt look-a-like.
A crowd of up to 70,000 is hoped for at Victoria Park (10 minute walk
from Central or Newtown stations) on 21 Feb from 10.00am to 8.00pm.
Whitney Houston in concert
If there are any tickets left we suggest you buy one. Seymour Centre,
Corner of City Road and Cleveland Street, Chippendale, New South Wales,
22 February, 7.30pm, Cost $70 - $90.
Spencer Tunick’s The Base
Get naked. Join thousands of other nude participants in the creation
of one of the largest public art projects ever produced. Somewhere in
the heart of Sydney (but I think its the Opera House) experience this
once-ina- lifetime opportunity to get naked with thousands of other people.
Each participant receives a print as a thank you.
What I want to know is have the organisers considered the separation
anxiety of thousand of people being separated from their mobile phones.
If you leave yours at home (is that possible?) bring a pen unless you
have a great memory [phone numbers]. If you do meet up afterwards you
have to say
Í didn't recognise you with your clothes on'.
1st March 2010. More information on the location and time will be communicated
via email to participants. I hope its a warm day.
Update - according to the Oracle of truths, The Daily Telegraph:
"The Sydney Opera House Forecourt this year will roll to the sounds
of pirate songs and the sight of thousands of nude people. Thousands of
Sydneysiders will be asked to shed their clothes in the name of art, as
renowned artist Spencer Tunick creates the mass nude installation on the
steps of the Opera House.
Tunick's installation, called The Base, is part of this year's Sydney
Mardi Gras Festival. But the artist is hoping Sydneysiders, regardless
of sexual preference, will show up on the day.
"I think people would be too embarrassed to show up just to look
at naked people,'' Tunick said. "The nude people far outweigh those
that aren't. When you have 3000 people nude and 50 or 100 who aren't the
attention goes towards them and they feel self-conscious. It's kind of
like reverse streaking."
Drag Races at Bondi Beach
Who ever thought of this is a genius. Drag Races will test each athlete
to the very edge with challenges designed to measure their endurance,
physical prowess and creativity. The roster of Olympic style events include:
Competitive Feminine Posing; Beached Volleyball; Three Heeled/Tripod Racing;
Handbag Discus and the Dainty Dune Dash. I think this will be hugely popular
if the weather is good so arrive early. 5th March Start 5pm.
Mardi Gras Party
The DJs, The spectacular shows, the lights, the stars, this is the Biggest
Party of all time since the last one. Dance-til-dawn fiesta that’s
unrivalled worldwide. 6th March - 10.00pm - 8.00am.
Until the next time - Happy Mardi Gras
