Kids in the Park returns for the spring school holidays from Saturday 24th September to Sunday 9th October 2011

Kids in The Park is famous for its program of over 50 activities for your kids to choose from, including a soccer camp, swimming lessons, cooking, creative arts and fun events.

Sydney Children's Festival - 26th September to 8th October

The Sydney Children's Festival is Australia's largest arts-based festival for kids, workshops to try and a huge range of free activities and loads of magical performances to see.

The Festival is programmed with an emphasis on participation, and almost all of the activities are designed to be a shared experience between children and grown-ups so the whole family can learn and explore together. There are events for all children up to the age of 12, with lots of activities that children of different ages can learn and share together.

You can also work with some of Australia's best circus and physical theatre companies, including Legs on the Wall, Circux Monoxide, Aerialise and Circus Solarus.

The Sydney Children's Festival will take place at CarriageWorks, the Seymour Centre, Riverside Theatres, Parramatta, JSPAC, Penrith and even the Newcastle Museum!

Just another day out with Thomas - Thirlmere - Saturday 8th - October Sunday 9th October

After their day out in July, Thomas and his steamy friends are on track for another school holiday weekend. You can expect to meet Thomas (Hi Thomas, how are you doing?..), take a "genuine steam train ride" in Donald the black engine and watch Henry shunt those 'Troublesome Trucks'.

If you are, or know a small engine who is, in to Thomas then you'll probably find this event really useful. You'll even meet the Fat Controller. But before we get too steamed up, you'll have book your train ride beforehand and it costs. Tickets go on sale online from mid August. Beep, Beep, all aboard!

The Crave Sydney International Food Festival - 1st to 31st October 2011

We all love a good feed. The Crave Food Festival takes what is a basic human need to a place not just under your rib cage. October is foodie heaven. Enjoy in moderation.

The Australian Museum - Kids Programs

The Drawing Room - 24th September – 9th October, 10am to 2pm

Your kids get to experiment with different drawing techniques and have a range of real Museum specimens at hand for inspiration. Alternatively, they can create their own, hopefully, beautiful butterfly using a step-by-step guides in the Search & Discover space. Once you have paid you entrance fee (see below), you can draw a line at paying anymore (the 'Drawing Room' is a freebee)

Seeking Science Workshop: Butterflies - 27th, 28th September & 4th, 5th October, 3 – 4.30pm

Suitable for kids from 5 to 9 years old. Get your kids in a flap over lots of ex-butterflies. Coming in an amazing range of colours from all corners of the globe. Cost Members $18, non-Members $20 (per child after general paid Museum entry), Bookings essential 02 9320 6163

Butterfly Dances - 27th, 29th September and 4th, 6th October, 12pm, 1pm and 2pm

The Australian Museum employs contemporary dancers to perform the dance of the Butterflies, presumably because the real ones have pins through them. The performance is suitable for all ages. Cost is zip again with general paid Museum entry (bookings are not required)

Face Painting 26th– 30th September and 3rd – 7th October, 12 – 3pm

Do your kids bug you? Well, get their face painted with a butterfly on their cheek or a caterpillar on their forehead. Face painting will delight your child and give a very familiar face a new look. Not recommended for runny noses.
Cost $3 after general paid Museum entry (bookings not required)

Indoor Play Centres

There has been a significant growth in indoor play centres. Many have cafes and provide an area for parents to relax whilst their kids let of steam (particularly if they are already wet :)

Recommended Sydney Indoor Play Centres

Swimming

If you looking for a cheaper option there's always your local swimming pool. My favourite would be Willoughby Leasure centre as they have a nice hot spa, coffee and cake.

Local Library

Not for kids straining at the car restraints but can work for some. Besides, worst that will happen is you will be shhhhhhhh'd, asked to leave, be shamed and never spoken to again :)

Your local Toy Shop

Potentially expensive and real head ache but if you were planning on going for little johnny's birthday then maybe now is the time.

For more things to do with kids over the School Holidays go to Sydney's Child and see their calendar pages. You should also 'çonsult' your local council's website for any holiday activities, check your local library notice board, RSL and other club websites.

Alternatively, if you want to make a run for it there are options north, west and south of Sydney
