What to do if it rains in Sydney

Things to do in Sydney if its still raining

Government House in the Royal Botanic Gardens

You get the house but may miss out abit on the Royal Botanic Gardens if its raining but still this is a good option for light or occasional showers. We did request that a retractable roof be placed over the Botanical Gardens as part of the Government recent stimulus package but this was surprising knocked back :)

How much? This will surprise you - absolutely nothing. Government House is only open Friday to Sunday - 10am to 3pm but the grounds are open every day - 10am to 4pm.

Hyde Park Barracks

A short taxi ride from Government House (assuming the Governor won't give you a lift :) ) you'll find the interesting Hyde Park Barracks where you can learn a little about the first Sydney-siders and their struggles against nature and themselves. Hyde Park Barracks Museum is open 9.30am - 5pm daily and well worth the visit.

Diving At Shelly Beach (North Side of Sydney Harbour)

If you are going to get wet you might as well do it properly. Diving at Shelly Beach is very popular.

Diving at Gordon's Bay and Bare Island (South Side of Sydney Harbour)

Gordon's bay (near Coogee) has a course of things to look at. Bare Island may (near La Perouse) have some Sea Horses left. Sadly their numbers are on the decline - 6 females to every male and no Sea Horse Viagra in sight.

Now inspired (?) you may want to learn how to Dive!

Big Top - Circus in Sydney

Sydney attracts the worlds best circus including one or two Australian acts such as Circus Oz.

Info on Circus Oz plus

Art Gallery of New South Wales

The Art Gallery of New South Wales is a short taxi ride from Sydney's CBD and houses many fine permanent works and regularly exhibits collections of international importance.

Karaoke bus - always good fun rain or shine

Singing in the rain without getting too wet. These guys know how to put a smile on your face even if it is raining.

Catch the excellent Karaoke Bus

Australian Museum

The Australian museum is an excellent museum in the heart of Sydney town.

Sydney Film Festival

The Sydney Film Festival is perfect for movie buffs and rainy days. Two weeks in June, so it might even be cold.

Orpheum Cremorne Cinema

You will find the traditional and charming Orpheum Cinema in Cremorne on the Lower North Shore just ten minutes past the Sydney Harbour Bridge (Take the Manly Exit once you've crossed the Sydney Harbour Bridge and turn right at the traffic lights). A delight is the organ player who descends with a way at the end of each performance. Orpheum is a Sydney treasure and if you are planning on a trip to cinema this is where you should go unless there is a cinema nearer to you with a better movie :)

The Orpheum is a beautiful old place voted best cinema in Sydney in 2004. Less than amble parking around the back so allow yourself time or catch the bus.

Museum of Contemporary Art

The MCA - Museum of Contemporary Art site on the opposite side of Circular Quay to the Opera House.

Sydney Observatory

Still worth a visit even if the clouds indicate otherwise. The Sydney Observatory is more than just Astronomy check out their web site below. The Observatory is close to Rocks, Sydney Harbour Bridge and Sydney Theatre Company.

Sydney Theatre Company

When its wet and cold outside why not cuddle up to a nice heart warming performance from the world class Sydney Theatre Company. The Sydney Theatre Company <STC> lives on a converted wharf close to the Sydney Harbour Bridge and not far from Observatory Hill. If you would like to dine at the Wharf Restaurant I'd suggest you book (02) 9250 1761

Rumoured they run an organised tour on Thursdays at 10am. Ring to confirm.

Casino – Star City, Darling Harbour

Apart from more pokies you could poke a pokie at, cards, roulette and the rest Star City Casino has some nice comfy chairs for watching sport, numerous bars, night clubs and shows. You could easily spend minutes there.

Sydney Town Hall

Sydney Town Hall is worth a look if you can get in as a tidy sum of public money was spent on it. So if you helped pay for it you should try to get some visual pleasure out of it.

Marble Bar - Hilton Hotel

An attractive bar is Marble Bar. Bands cater for an ‘older’ clientele (as in a mostly unpierced)
The Marble Bar is situated in the bowls of the Hilton Hotel in Pitt Street in the city and often has live performances.

Any wet weather suggestions you would like to share?
