Things to do in Sydney over the Summer School Holidays

What to do in School Holidays with the kids?

What to do in Sydney over the School Holidays?

Once all the presents have been unwrapped, batteries purchased, toys played with, broken, returned and finally ignored it won't even be New Years. You'll soon be wondering how you are going to survive till February. I know its scary but we can do it..we have to..

Hawkesbury International Sand Sculpting Championships - Windsor to 29th January

Sand Sculptures are becoming more and more popular and the competition to win, the Hawkesbury International Sand Sculpting Championships, is gritty. The theme of the competition is ‘Mystical Creatures’ and the competition entries will be on display so you can wander through the event at your leasure. Two sculptors will be on site creating display pieces of 50-60 tonnes of sand so you can see how it is done. In addition to the sculptures there will be stuff for the kids including sand sculpting workshops, sand art and sand bottles.

Paddle Pop Adventure Park - Macquarie University - Saturday, 28th January - Sunday, 29th January

Paddle Pop Adventure Park has, apparently, the world's longest slip-and-slide, the Jungle Vines climbing wall, elastic rope Jungle, River Rapids slide, Adventure maze, Jurassic Jumping Castle, bungee trampolines, bumper boats, river rollers, and face painting. Then there's a special screening of the Paddle Pop BEGINS movie on a massive outdoor cinema screen. The "Hungry Lions Den" provides sustenance with "a range of healthy options" and there will be water bottle re-fill stations on hand.

The Art of the Brick

Do your kids like Lego? That much eh! Well you'd better be quick as tickets to the Art of the Brick are touted to be disappearing like, well, Harry Potter Lego kits:

Hairy Maclary and Friends - Based on the books by Lynley Dodd - Sydney Opera House - Selected dates throughout January

Everybody is woofing down the tales of Hairy Maclary from Donaldson’s Dairy. Following hit performances at the Edinburgh Fringe last year, Hairy Maclary and co-stars Hercules Morse (as big as a Horse), Bottomley Potts (covered in spots), Schnitzel von Krumm (with the very low tum) and Scarface Claw (the toughest tomcat in town) are generating rave reviews in Sydney

"… so numerous and vociferous was the audience that sometimes the performers were drowned out…they were, however, able to keep the kids in stitches, no matter the volume…’ – THE HERALD"

"The best thing out of New Zealand since Split Enz" SMH

EQ Summer School Holiday Adventure Action - Open 10am-4pm daily during School Holidays from 7th January, subject to weather, except public holidays.

So what's on at EQ? Bumper Boats, Windjammer Ride, Knights Castle, Jurassic Adventure Play and a Scooby Doo inflatable adventure to name but a few:

"After all the excitement of these activities the kids will be able to cool down with Bubbles of Fun from Flymotion. Each participant is enclosed in their own waterproof clear sphere which is pumped full of fresh air, sealed and then released onto the shaded water of a custom built pool.

There will be loads of other fun activities at EQ throughout the school holidays including Hoyts IMAX, Strike Bowling & Laser Skirmish and creative activities at Plaster Painting Studios."

Kids on Deck: Amazing AQUA Adventures - Wednesday 28th December 2011 - Wednesday 25th January 2012

Discover the wonderful world of water for living, water for leisure and water for the future through interactive games and art activities. Make a bubble painting, a water-drop mobile or use recycled materials to assemble spectacular sculptures. Design your own water conservation badge.

Family fun: Night in the Navy - Saturday 21st January 2012

Join salty sea dog Jack Bluto Tar for a family evening of adventure aboard HMAS Vampire. Check out Vampire's gun turret and uncover the truth about the ship's ghost lurking in the surgery. Use your powers of deduction to decode the secret semaphore message and enjoy a sausage sizzle on the museum's wharf.

Powerhouse Museum

The Powerhouse is not running a School Holiday program this year :-( This does not mean that there is nothing in the Powerhouse for the kids to do. Far from it. We have two major kid friendly exhibitions, The Wiggles and Harry Potter, both in the same location (you may need to book to see Mr Potter). This is a big plus if you have a mix of young, and not so young, children. Test them on their negotiation skills..

Sydney Olympic Park - Kids in the Park

Kids in the Park has over 50 activities to choose from. Much is free, less costs $20 or so but not much more. There are various clinics, camps and workshops for kids who want to develop skills in sports, writing, filmmaking, dancing and more.

Sydney Harbour Bridge - A good looker whatever the weather

Sydney Harbour Bridge

Climb The Sydney Harbour Bridge Pylon

The Sydney Harbour Bridge Pylon is great value and packed full of great information and 200 steps. You will be rewarded at the top with a great view of the Sydney Opera House so unless it is really chucking it down its well worth taking steps to see it. The kids will enjoy the climb and the view but you might miss out on much of the info.

Get Crafty

Take the kids down to your local $2 shop. Let them spend a few bucks on cards, stickers and the like and hey presto! Homemade Thank You, Birthday or any kind of Greeting Card you can think of. Give a prize to whoever writes the most / best / most colourful creation. I'm sure Grandma or Pa or Aunt or Uncle would be thrilled to receive one and the kids could be entertained, for, well, maybe a while actually (if you get lucky).
